Difference between web design & development

Hi, I am new in the online community. Just hear a lot of interesting news about Internet. But, I felt most interesting in earning money from online. One of my friend told me to start freelancing career. He advised me to chose web design or web development as a professional career. He lives a far away from my house. But I am not understanding the differences between web design and professional. Is there any?

Please help me to clear my concept.
